Evolution of Siri: How Apple Plans to Outsmart ChatGPT Dominance

Apple was the first Smart device that came with voice-activated technology in 2011 by the name of Siri. Still, this has been at the forefront of the smart technology world despite being the guiding user with its conversational interface. Siri has faced tough competition from some big rivals like Amazon’s Rufus and Google’s Assistant. Additionally, the rise of ChatGPT-powered assistants has only intensified this competition, highlighting areas where it could improve.  However, there is a recent development in Apple’s technology that suggests Apple might soon be significantly enhancing Siri’s specifications, potentially transforming it into the “ultimate virtual assistant.”

A Leap in AI Integration

It is expected that this tool will come with an evolution of integration of large language models (LLMs), the same as the technology that powers ChatGPT. This latest advancement shows that in the future it can process and understand complex language and context more effectively than ever before. For example, Siri’s ability to handle follow-up requests has been a prominent shortcoming, showing a lack of contextual awareness. So, this upcoming advancement aims to address these limitations and allow it to maintain a conversational flow more spontaneously and naturally.

Apple’s Siri On-Device and Conversational Advancement

While Apple experts are planning to improve Apple’s Siri, its research into making LLM AI models run on-device marks a significant step towards enhancing it capabilities. This move will also line up the tech giant’s emphasis on privacy and efficiency, enabling this tool to operate more independently of cloud-based processing. Moreover, a new model dubbed ReALM (Reference Resolution as Language Modeling) promises to uplift Siri’s understanding of vague references within conversations, potentially surpassing the context comprehension of ChatGPT’s models.

Apple’s Siri Will Improve Follow-up Interactions

As Apple is rumored to unveil Siri’s improvement via iOS 18, the updated version is expected to better manage consecutive requests. Apple’s experts are training it on large language models so that they can improve the virtual assistant’s ability to answer questions more accurately and quickly. This large language model is a specific type of AI that is expert at understanding and producing natural language. So, with the advancement in LLMs, this will likely become more skilled at processing the way users speak. Thus, this tool is expected to become a more context-aware and powerful virtual assistant as it was ever before.

Apple’s Siri Execution of Multistep Tasks

Not limited to this better understanding of users’ requests, in the future it will perform complex tasks like being more capable and efficient. Apple plans to use large language models to make Siri smarter. So, Siri will respond to simple voice commands for more complex tasks such as converting a set of photos into a GIF and sending it to a contact, with simple voice commands.

Enhanced App Interactions

The upcoming version of Siri could become better automatically, including completing incomplete sentences. This can all happen with LLMs making it uplift its predictive text game. Apart from this, Apple is also rumored to be planning to add AI to as many apps as possible thus making it an even better version. Moreover, it will also include a feature in the Messages app to craft complex messages.

So, Apple’s tech community eagerly anticipates the official announcement of these Siri upgrades as Apple CEO Tim Cook said this big Al announcement is expected later this year. The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWD) in June 10 has been a historical venue for revealing significant software updates. So, Apple’s efforts to upgrade Siri’s AI capabilities not only promise to enhance the user experience but also signal the tech commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in the ever-evolving digital assistants.
